Temple of Artemis (a.k.a. Temple of Diana)

Temple of Artemis was located two kilometers from Ephesus used to be one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It was built and destroyed three times till it's latest form that we see today from 401 A.D. Today only one single standing column, some foundations and fragments of the walls can be seen where this wonder used to stand. The old temple was built around seventh century B.C. in the name of the goddess Artemis. The temple was financed by the wealthy king of Lydia. The temple started to attract merchants, kings, and sightseers, many of donated sacrifices, jewelery and other valuables to Artemis temple. As we know temple was burned down by an arsonist, named Herostratus, who was motivated by fame at any cost, thus the term "herostratic fame." Legend says the Ephesians ordered name ''Herostratus'' never be recorded and that anyone who spoke of him should be put to death. Some of the columns that were built in Hagia Sophia (a church in Istanbul, Turkey) are thought to have been originally part of the Temple of Artemis.
